Photostory Beginnings: Alpha Phi Omega

Photostory - Part 1

The most underrated organization on High Point University's campus has got to be APO. Alpha Phi Omega is the co-ed service fraternity whose mission is to provide service through volunteer work that directly affects the community or even the nation. The organization derived its principles from the Scout Oath and the Laws of the Boy Scouts of America as the BSA are their founders. My idea for a photostory is to journey through the process of Alpha Phi Omega including events such as rush, service, big little reveal, and more.

Step 1: The Original Photo

This fellow member of APO is sporting apparel from the fraternity. She is holding up three fingers to symbolize the APO sign, extracted from the three finger salute that the Boy Scouts use to represent the Scout Promise: Honor God and Country. Although the image is at a side angle, creating more visual appeal, the railing in the background is distracting from the focal point of the photograph. This image also exhibits a clear color palette, bouncing between blues and neutrals.

Step 2: Cropping

The image has been cropped so that subject matter is cut off on all four sides. By cropping off the wall railing, it eliminates background noise and off-centered the subject. This off-center effect properly utilizes the design technique of rule of thirds. The next issue is the lack of contrast and finding the correct balance of darks and lights.

Step 3: Adjusting Levels

The levels tool in photoshop allows you to stretch the brightness and darkness levels of an image. Because her skin slightly blends into the neutral colored background, by stretching the contrast in the image, the pink tones of her face surface. Although you lose the texture of her shirt, the darker blue creates a more striking backing for the fraternity pocket logo. The added contrast also further develops the level of depth displayed in the photograph. The levels are pushed far enough to view a noticeable difference between step two and step three without decreasing the quality of the image.
